Rage Against the Machine Hits Occupy Wall Street

Having already performed at Occupy Los Angeles,Tom Morello, the guitarist from Rage Against the Machine, will stop by Zuccotti Park Thursday at noon both to scope out the scene and perform.
Morello is but the latest musician to come through. Kanye West accompanied Russell Simmons to the four-week old protest on Monday while rapper Talib Kweli performed an impromptu set Oct. 6.
Thursday could be an early test of the protesters’ mettle as scattered thunderstorms have been predicted. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, who called for the protesters to leave briefly on Friday so the park could be cleaned, has indicated he expects the area to clear out once the real cold sets in.
The protesters have vowed to stay as long as is necessary, though they may still need a boost from the copycat protests located in fair weather cities.

So many U.S. manufacturing jobs, so few skilled workers

Technology giant Siemens Corp., the U.S. arm of Germany's Siemens AG (SI.N), has over 3,000 jobs open all over the country. More than half require science, technology, engineering and math-related skills.
Other companies report job vacancies that range from six to 200, with some positions open for at least nine months.
Manufacturing is hurt by a dearth of skilled workers.
"What we have been saying for quite a while is that even though there is a high unemployment rate, it's very difficult to find skilled people," said Jeff Owens, president of ATS, a manufacturing consulting services company.
A survey by ManpowerGroup found that a record 52 percent of U.S. employers have difficulty filling critical positions within their organizations -- up from 14 percent in 2010.
Most of the jobs hard to fill are for skilled trades, Internet technology, engineers, sales representatives and machine operators.
Contour Precision, based in Clover, South Carolina, does contract work for the energy and aerospace industries. It is currently looking for six technicians. It has had positions open since last year.
Unemployment in manufacturing is at 8.4 percent, below the overall rate of 9.1 percent. According to the Labor Department's latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, there were 240,000 open jobs in manufacturing in August up 38.7 percent from a year ago.
The problem is sufficiently serious that businesses are pushing Congress to address the issue of visas and help them hire more high-skilled foreigners. <ID:N1E79B0J6>
These companies' inability to fill open jobs suggests that part of the unemployment problem confronting the nation could be more of a structural nature rather than a downturn in the business cycle.
Two years after the end of the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, about 14 million Americans are still unemployed.
In September, nearly 45 percent of them had been out of work for six months or more. The longer people are out of the workforce, the more dated their skills become, making it even harder to reintegrate them into the labor market machinery.

Japan corp mood dips as yen, global slowdown bite

Japanese manufacturing sentiment worsened in October for the first time since the aftermath of the March earthquake and faltering global growth combined with a strong yen is expected to dampen it further, a Reuters poll showed on Thursday.
The monthly poll, which is highly correlated with the Bank of Japan's closely watched quarterly tankan corporate survey, added to growing evidence that the economy's quick rebound from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March is losing momentum.
The central bank has kept its policy unchanged since it boosted its asset buying scheme in August, but has been flagging heightened risks stemming from Europe's sovereign debt woes and global economic slowdown.
The Reuters Tankan showed the manufacturing sentiment index, derived by subtracting the percentage of pessimistic responses from optimistic ones, fell two points from September to plus 6, the first drop since it plunged by a record in April after the March 11 disaster.
The index is seen sliding further to plus 4 in January, dragged down by sectors such as electric machinery and transport equipment.
That sense of caution was also apparent in the Reuters Tankan, taken from Sept. 26 to Oct. 7. The poll covered 400 big companies, of which 250 responded.
In a sign that weak domestic demand is also weighing on the world's No.3 economy, service-sector firms' sentiment index fell for the second straight month to barely above zero, with their mood seen rising only slightly in the coming three months.

Crisis grips North Korean rice bowl

North Korea (AlertNet) - In a pediatric hospital in North Korea's most productive farming province, children lay two to a bed. All showed signs of severe malnutrition: skin infections, patchy hair, listless apathy.
It's also getting late for North Korea to get the massive amount of food aid it claims to need before the harsh winter sets in. The country's dysfunctional food-distribution system, rising global commodities prices and sanctions imposed over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs had contributed to what appears to be a hunger crisis in the North, even before devastating summer floods and typhoons compounded the emergency.
The regime's appeals for massive food aid have gone mostly unanswered by a skeptical international community. Only 30 percent of a United Nations food aid target for North Korea has been met so far. The United States and South Korea, the two biggest donors before sanctions, have said they won't resume aid until they are satisfied the military-led communist regime won't divert the aid for its own uses and progress is made on disarmament talks.
The U.N.'s Food and Agricultural Organization, for instance, said last month after visiting the North that "the damage was not so significant." Another U.N. body, the World Food Programme, which has a regular presence in the North, warned in March of growing hunger. The sharp divergence of views is one reason why the U.N.'s emergency relief coordinator will visit this month to assess the situation.
Humanitarian news service run by the Thomson Reuters Foundation which covers crises worldwide, saw evidence of alarming malnutrition and damaged crops, but also signs of some promise for the coming rice harvest machinery.
Although tightly controlled by government officials, an Alertnet reporter and Reuters photographers and video journalists were able to conduct a week-long trip into the South Hwanghae region. The visit included rare access to collective farms, orphanages, hospitals, rural clinics, schools and nurseries.
The regime's motive in granting the access appears to be to amplify its food-aid appeals. North Korean officials at first asked Alertnet to reach out to its subscriber base to mobilize help--and at one point asked the Thomson Reuters Foundation for a donation. Alertnet declined, saying all it could do is visit and report on the situation.
The picture the regime presented in South Hwanghae was largely one of chronic hunger, dire healthcare, limited access to clean water and a collapsing food-rationing system, all under a command economy that has been in crisis since the collapse of the Soviet Union 20 years ago threw North Korea into isolation.
Measurements taken of each child's mid-upper arm with color-coded plastic bracelets -- a standard test for malnutrition -- showed 12 were in the orange or red danger zones, meaning some could die without proper treatment.

German fashion designer makes clothes from milk

BERLINA young fashion designer from the German city of Hanover is revolutionizing high fashion by designing clothes with a staple she can find in her fridge -- milk.
Anke Domaske, 28, has developed a fabric called QMilch made from high concentrations of the milk protein casein -- the first man-made fiber produced entirely without chemicals.
"It feels like silk and it doesn't smell -- you can wash it just like anything else," Domaske told Reuters.
Made from all natural materials, the QMilch fabric is ecological but also has many health benefits, said Domaske, who also said the amino acids in the protein are antibacterial, anti-aging and can help regulate both blood circulation and body temperature.
Domaske's fashion label Mademoiselle Chi Chi -- a favorite among the likes of Mischa Barton and Ashlee Simpson -- has now started weaving the milk fiber into its collection.
Currently the MCC clothes -- which feature flowing wrap dresses with edgy cuts and bright patterns -- are made from a combination of various fibers, including QMilch. But Domaske plans to design a collection made entirely from the milk fiber.
Milk fabric has been around since the 1930s but was always produced in unecological ways that used a lot of chemicals. Unlike earlier prototypes, QMilch is made almost entirely from casein.
"We have developed an all-natural fiber consisting of a very high concentration of casein, with a few other natural ingredients -- and in only two years," the former microbiology student Domaske said.
The casein is extracted from dried milk powder and then heated up in a type of meat-mincing machine with other natural ingredients. The fiber comes out in strands and is then spun into yarn on a spinningmachine.
Domaske said it would take about 6 liters of milk to produce an entire dress, which costs about $199 to 200 euros.
Luckily, for that kind of money, the clothes don't come with an expiry date -- during the heating process, the molecules bind in such a way that the protein won't decompose.
Due to its anti-bacterial qualities, the milk fiber can also be used in medicine and makeup. Even some auto companies have looked into using the fiber for car upholstery.

Lllionis Solar Farm

The project's developer scaled down plans due to a lack of funding; Underscoring the challenges Midwest states face in bringing solar online The difficulty experienced by even Wanxiang, a company known in the business world for having deep pockets may illustrate just how tough solar
But while the federal stimulus package pumped billions into renewable energy, that money has largely been allocated already, leaving entrepreneurs like Walters scrambling to patch together start-up funding. Like other states, he said, Illinois is at low ebb in available funding.
Located on the banks of the Rock River about 80 miles northwest of Chicago, Rockford is like many small Midwestern cities. A generation ago, it was a blue-collar powerhouse filled with machine shops and factories. Today, many of those workplaces have vanished, taking away thousands of jobs. The city now looks to green industries for help.
In April 2010, Rockford got a boost when Wanxiang, an Elgin, Ill.-based subsidiary of one of China's largest privately owned companies, opened a 40,000 square-foot solar panel factory. And in August 2010, Gov. Quinn announced with great fanfare that the state was giving Wanxiang a $4 million grant to kick-start the development of a 62-megawatt solar farm at the city's airport.
The Wanxiang proposal was an appealing vision. If fulfilled, Wanxiang would provide the city of 152,000 with power for 10,000 homes. The only other major solar farm proposed for the state was a 10-megawatt facility in Chicago owned by Exelon Corp., the parent company of ComEd, a public utility in northern Illinois.

Brazil Farm Industrial Revolution

BRASILIAA quiet industrial revolution is unfolding in the coffee fields of Brazil where a diminishing supply of seasonal workers is forcing farmers to opt for machines they've long eschewed: mechanical harvesters.
Some hundred years after the promise of a prosperity attracted 2 million immigrants to Brazil's coffee plantations, farm hands are abandoning the taxing job of picking and bagging the world's largest coffee crop for year-round full time work in prospering nearby towns.
Neither Martin nor his competitors in the secretive, niche market were willing to provide specific sales figures. But all concurred it was a growing market whose sales this year had benefited from the surge in coffee prices that began in June 2010 when they shot up from around $1.35 per lb. They have hovered since January in a range of $2.30 to $3.10.
The world is relying on large producers like Brazil to grow more coffee. Supplies of superior grades of beans have run short as demand grows and after bad weather and tree renewal dented Colombia's arabica prestigious produce for two seasons.
Importers have been turning to Brazil for substitutes to Colombian produce, and mechanization may help the country keep those customers by cutting production costs. Colombia's hilly terrain mostly rules out using machines.
Meanwhile, pickers have enjoyed pay hikes as producers compete for a shrinking pool of workers. But the higher pay has not staunched the exodus of farm hands seizing new opportunities in fast-growing nearby towns.
Brazil's southeastern coffee belt is roughly equidistant from several of the country's largest cities, a logistical plus attracting manufacturers of electrical and electronic components and auto parts, among others.
A Brazil-wide construction boom that itself is crying out for labor and paying aggressively to recruit, is also soaking up labor where it can find it.
Such rapid wage hikes mean the outlay of up to $400,000 for a harvester is no longer as daunting to producers fighting a losing battle to hold on to manpower and spending up to half the price of each bag of coffee on the cost of picking it.
There are some drawbacks;Machines cannot work on slopes and some farmers whose trees are bunched together may have to sacrifice some rows so machines can pass through the gaps.

Sany Heavy Pump $3.3 Billion In HK IPO

Sany Heavy Industry , China's largest construction machinery maker, aims to raise up to $3.3 billion in what could be Hong Kong's second-biggest stock offering this year; Sany Heavy's offering is one of several deals that are pushing through Hong Kong's narrowing IPO window, with most stock market sales pulled or on hold until markets steady across the globe.
The company, controlled by China's richest man, Liang Wengen, is offering 1.34 billion shares for HK$16.13-HK$19.38 each, putting the total offer value at up to HK$25.97 billion; The sale would be the biggest since commodities trader Glencore raised nearly $10 billion in a dual listing in Hong Kong and London in May and would top a $2.5 billion initial public offering by luxury goods maker Prada in June.
Sany, often referred to as China's Caterpillar , and rival XCMG Construction Machinery have benefited from China's construction boom over the past several years.
Sany's CEO and founder Liang is listed China's richest man by Forbes, with an estimated wealth of $9.3 billion. Liang, 55, owns 58 percent stake in Sany Group and the Hong Kong offer is set to further boost his fortunes. His stake in the company will drop to 51 percent after the Hong Kong offer, according to the offer prospectus.
Sany's success partly reflects the rapid growth of China's high-value added manufacturing sector over the past decade, with exports from makers of pricey machinery and construction equipment advancing faster than low-value goods like toys. Sany is based in Changsha, the capital of Hunan in southern China.
The company's Shanghai-listed shares closed down 1.2 percent on Monday at 14.85 yuan, its lowest level since Feb. 10. The stock is up 3 percent so far in 2011, compared with a 13.2 percent plunge in the Shanghai Composite Index .
Sinohydro, the builder of the Three Gorges Dam, said on Monday it would launch a $2.7 billion initial public offering this week, confirming a recent Reuters report.
Chinese consumer companies, including tea maker Tenfu Holdings Co Ltd and Xiao Nan Guo Restaurants Holdings Ltd recently launched $485 million worth of IPOs in Hong Kong.
Shoe retailer Hongguo International Holdings Ltd raised about $148 million late on Friday, pricing its IPO at HK$2.3 a share, at the low end of a proposed price range. Hongguo was the first company to go public in Hong Kong since the $1.2 billion IPO in July by hypermarket operator Sun Art Retail Group Ltd .
With markets continuing to be volatile, pricing plays an even bigger role in ensuring how offerings fare.
Sany is offering a 16.6% discount to its A share reference point, more than the 13.3 % discount offered by Citic, given the bigger size of the fund-raising.
Sany Heavy's Hong Kong offering values the company at up to 14.7 times its 2011 estimated earnings and up to 10.9 times its 2012 earnings, according to forecasts by the banks underwriting the deal.
China's share of global sales of construction machinery grew to 40% in 2010 from just 5% in 2005, driven by a 15% compounded annual growth in China's GDP between 2000 and 2010.
But the company makes more than 500 models of construction machinery, faces challenges due to a slowdown in the Chinese economy caused by weak global economic growth.

Canadian Wholesale Trade Grew Up

According to Statistics Canada,Canadian wholesale trade grew by 0.8% in July from June, which was helped by strong business investment in machinery and equipment.
After removing the effects of the currency's appreciation against the U.S. dollar, which lowered prices for imported goods sold by wholesalers, sales rose 1.5%.
The July sales matched market expectations. The agency revised downward its June numbers to show flat sales versus the 0.2% gain.
The machinery, equipment and supplies sector registered the biggest increase in dollar terms in July, climbing 2.1%, business investment has lagged other indicators during Canada's economic recovery but policy makers have been heartened by recent signs investment is intensifying.
Personal and household goods and motor vehicles and parts also showed big gains; Inventories rose by 0.3% and the inventory-to-sales ratio slipped to 1.17 from 1.18 in June.

China's Sany Heavy to raise $3.33 billion in Hong Kong offer

China's largest construction machinerymaker Sany Heavy Industry want to raise up to $3.33 billion in what could be Hong Kong's No. 2 stock offering this year.
Sany Heavy's offering comes on the heels of a slew of deal that hit Hong Kong's equity market last week after nearly two straight months of drought in share sales as investors shunned turbulent global markets.
The company, run by China's richest man, is offering 1.34 billion shares for HK$16.13-HK$19.38 each, putting the total offer value at up to HK$25.97 billion ($3.33 billion); According to a term sheet seen by Reuters on Monday.
Sany's CEO and founder Liang Wengen is listed China's richest man by Forbes, with an estimated wealth of $9.3 billion.
Offerings from Citic Securities and Sany Heavy could also open the way for other large deals in coming months.
Sinohydro, the builder of the Three Gorges Dam, said on Monday it would launch a $2.7 billion initial public offering this week confirming a Reuters report last week.
Sany is offering a 16.6 percent discount to its A share reference point, more than the 13.3 percent discount offered by Citic, given the bigger size of the fund raising.
China's share of global sales of construction machinery has grown to 40 percent in 2010 from just 5 percent in 2005, driven by a 15 percent compounded annual growth in China's GDP between 2000 and 2010.
Sany plans to use nearly half of the proceeds to build new plants to expand capacity for excavators, crawlers and cranes.
Sany Heavy, which has a market value of about $18 billion, plans to price the offer around September 26 and the shares are set to start trading in Hong Kong on or around October 3, the term sheet showed.

New Energy Program In Fukushima Coast

The earth quarke caused nuclear disaster in Fukushima early this year, Japanese start to rethink energy source, now they come out with brand new solution for it, developing floating wind turbine in the deepwater.
It aims to outpace the leaders in the sector in Europe, trade ministry official Masanori Sato said on Tuesday.
In the next five years, Japan plans to spend 10 to 20 billion yen to install six or more floating turbines off the northeast coast. It will work with firms including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Fuji Heavy Industries for the relative machinery.
Globally, Norway leads the way on floating turbines with a 2009 pilot project while other countries including Britain and Portugal have studied the technology.
Japan is compiling a third emergency budget likely to be more than 10 trillion yen to rebuild its northeastern coast after the earthquake and tsunami hit in March; Leaving 20,000 dead or missing and triggering the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Japan, one of the world's biggest greenhouse gas emitters, has been studying whether it can install conventional offshore wind turbines in an effort to cut its carbon emissions but thinks floated turbines could suit its waters better.
After the initial five-year programme, the trade ministry hopes to develop as early as 2020 an offshore wind farm off the northeastern coast with the capacity of about 1,000 Megawatts; But its success depends on the profitability of floating turbines as well as winning over local fishermen.
Wind power accounts for less than 1%of Japan's power demand. A government panel is set to start reviewing as early as this month Japan's energy targets, it had aimed to boost nuclear capacity to meet over half of power demand by 2030 by building 13 new reactors.

The China International Machinery Trade Expo (CIMTE for short) is a grand international fair held by well-known associations from mainland and Hong Kong. Both the Spring Expo from April 14 to 18 and Fall Expo from October 14 to 18 will be held in Guangzhou International Sourcing Center at the same time and place with the Canton Fair. This Expo intends to promote mechanical development and boost the machinery trade in China by communicating and cooperating with outstanding foreign machinery and relevant equipment manufacturers and merchants. Due to the influential Canton Fair and location advantage of Guangzhou, a bunch of oversea buyers and agents are playing an active role in Guangzhou all the time, making Guangzhou famous for export. Furthermore, the CIMTE will further boost development of machinery industry and provide the best trade platform for Chinese enterprises to export and foreign precision machinery manufacturers to develop Chinese market based on the solid demand on machinery in China.
[Guarantee both Domestic and Oversea Trades. Seven Reasons to Join the CIMTE]
1. China is the biggest machinery manufacturing and consumption country in the world. South China Region is the world most powerful manufacturing base, where nearly 1 million manufacturers have settled in. Industries there cover heavy industry, equipment manufacturing industry, automobile, mould, hardware, electronic industry, new energy, printing, rubber-plastic, metallurgy, food, chemical and texture. As the most developed province in China, Guangdong Province has launched New Ten Projects requiring a total investment of RMB 2,370 billion. The South China Region will have an unparalleled machinery consumption market because of these projects plus fast urban construction and traffic development.
2. The CIMTE will be held together with the first phase of Canton Fair in the section B of Pazhou Pavilion of the Canton Fair. The location is only 50m away across from Canton Fair’s foreign merchant reception, so it shares about 0.3 million foreign merchants with the Canton Fair.
3. The CIMTE designs a large outdoor machinery display area right next to the section B and Canton Fair’s foreign merchant reception. High profile show of large machineries will catch foreign merchants’ eyes and interest them to place orders.
4. The undertaker will arrange for free shuttle buses to pick up foreign merchants from surrounding specialized markets and star-level hotels and buyers from Dongguan, Huadu, Shenzhen and Hong Kong to the Expo site. At least 100 professional interpreters are ready to work around the Canton Fair site, foreign merchant reception and distribute CIMTE tickets at major subway stations, making their best efforts to attract valuable buyers.
5. The undertaker’s Buyer Development Sector will arrange for several full-time employees to distribute 0.3 million free invitations to target clients at home and abroad, oversea buyers and merchants, and work together with commercial representatives of consulates for determining oversea high-quality buyers and invite them by call, fax and mail one by one.
6. Advertisings will be released on professional machinery websites and journals, and newspaper will keep on reporting and advertising this Expo. An extensive promotion campaign targeting English Alibaba website, Globalmark, Made-in-China and other well-known machinery websites at home and abroad will be conducted. At the same time, large outdoor advertisings, subway advertisings and airport advertising for the Pazhou Pavilion will be set up. Besides, Expo pamphlets will be put in the hotel rooms for the foreign merchants attending the Canton Fair.
7. CIMTE lasts for 5 days and inaugurates one day before the Canton Fair so that the enterprises will have more chances to develop clients.
[CIMTE Solution]
1. If you worry about a reliable stand in the Canton Fair, CIMTE will be a perfect choice for you.
2. If you have a stand in the Canton Fair already but is not satisfied with the area for showing your company image and products, you may set up a stand in the CIMTE for your most valuable clients.
[Introduction and Location Advantage of the Pavilion]
The Guangzhou International Sourcing Center is 180,000m2 large and located at the Pazhou parcel, next to the Pazhou CIEF site. The exit A of Pazhou station on No.8 subway line directly leads to the registration office of the Center and Canton Fair’s foreign merchant reception in section B.
